VENICE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1953 March 2001

(Reformatted for Website presentation by Ron Reed)
Another year has gone by. They seem to be arriving sooner every year.

The "Old Broads" party at Jeannine McIntire’s house last August was fun. There were 3 new faces: Alice Thacker, Hortensia Menchaca and Rae Ann Moorman - all three looked terrific. The rest attending were Pat Bates, Betty Blaauw, Theresa Blackwell, Louise Grossman, Olga Jimenez, Sheila Kalinsky, Lois Kenison, Gloria LaSalle, Janice May, Mary Margaret Noirot, Nancy Ozaki, Cynthia Pestana, Joyce Raum, Pam Roberts, Roberta Tehenepe, Yvonne Vignolle, Jackie Wilson, Toni Wilson, Shirley Zullo, Jeannine and myself.

Jeannine out did herself cooking and was a great hostess. We looked at lots of old pictures and talked - talked - talked, it was fun.

Did you happen to see the movie "Jewel" on TV a few months ago (with Farrah Fawcett) or hear about the book on Oprah Winfrey’s "book list"? It was the story of Wilman Lott’s mother. He was in our class. It was written by Bret Lott (either his brother or nephew). Sheila Kalinsky, AKA Sandi Lott, was married to Wilman’s brother. Anyway he became an instant millionaire from this story.

I was sent this bio about Anita Adler (I think from Robin Allen). Anita became a Los Angeles City School teacher after graduating from Cal State around 1956 or 57. While working as a teacher she got her Masters in psychology and became a school psychologist. She and her husband Morrie Markell have 2 children and two grandchildren. They are both retired and travel extensively. She says Anita loves retirement and looks great.

Judy Ellis sent me an e-mail (April 2000), she got married 16 months prior to this. To a fellow from Newport Beach that moved to Utah. Judy retired from teaching at the University. She spent a lot of years (starting late) going to school. They live close to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, two hours South of Las Vegas. She sounds very happy, and she’s now "Doctor Judy."

Robin Allen left Palm Springs for Fallbrook. Bought a house near her kids and grandchildren. It sounds like she would like "This Old House" to come in. Her son-in-law is helping her fix up everything - big yard - lots of fruit trees. She says she keeps telling herself "I can do this."

Lots of traveling going on:
  • Judy Ellis went to Rome and Spain last spring.
  • Herm Schuler, Frank Wommach and their wives took a 12-day Mediterranean cruise last May. Herm’s wife sent me some pictures. The guys were all dressed up in their tuxes.
  • Jack North went to China for 3 weeks.
  • Gloria LaSalle took an 18-day tour of China.
  • Right now (4/1/2001) Diane Dilworth is on a cruise in the South China Sea.
  • Nancy Ozaki travel a lot - went to Europe last year.

Last September Gene Manzer, Lou Cicco and their wives met at Lawarence Welk’s in Escondido, where Toni Wilson and her husband have a time-share. Cynthia Pestana, Lois Kenison, Robin Allen and Jenny Lombardo met them there. They all had a good time - I was a no show as it was my grandson’s birthday - and "grandma" was having the party. You know how that goes. Toni sent some cute pictures though.

I’m going to sandwich the bad news in the middle.
  • June Williams passed away in October 1999. It was either Pick’s disease or Alzheimer’s they weren’t sure. She had been in a home for two years prior to her death.
  • Claudia Burgards’ husband wrote to tell me about Claudia’s death. They were sitting at the breakfast table, she went into a convulsion - he rushed her to the hospital, she was in a coma for three days. It was an aneurisms/stroke; she died April 3, 2000.
  • Carolyn Clifton had a heart attack and passed away August 16, 2000.
  • Patsy Chatlin’s husband called - she died of throat and mouth cancer after a 2-year illness, November 2000.
  • Ray Kerber died of Leukemia in January 2001.

I found these notices on the Internet "Social Security Death Index". They matched up with the birthdays I have on file.
    David DeSmet June 1969,
    Thomas Glynn October 1988,
    Don Langham June 1994,
    Vernon Raynolds February 1993,
    Robert Wehrle January 1987,
    Bertha Swan January 1996.
  • Margie Hunt lost her husband Bill Runyon (S’51) at Christmas time. Bill put up a good battle with cancer. She said his heart gave out while they were trying to put a feeding tube in his abdomen.

  • Karen Ogburn is on the mend, recovering from a stroke, last I heard she is improving daily.

  • Gene Manzer is home recovering from colon cancer surgery he had a few weeks ago. Glad to hear he’s doing so well.

  • Jo Schuler (Herm’s wife) had her last radiation treatment for breast cancer - has a clean bill of health now. Since so many of you know Jo, and she’s one of my e-mail buddies, I’ve adopted her as a classmate.

  • Lou Cicco is having problems with his heart again (2 previous by-passes). They had to put a stint in one his arteries while vacationing in Texas and another stint when he got back to Montana this month. He is planning a trip to Ohio to the Cleveland Clinic this summer to get checked out

  • Liz (Spence) Arreola called - Bob is teaching ceramics at the local Jr. College. He does such great work. Liz is fun to talk to and we laugh a lot.

  • Velda Vadnis called from West Plains, Missouri. She lost her husband in November 1999 and her 42-year-old daughter died of cancer. We had a nice talk. She’s doing well.

  • Billy Rea finally got e-mail, which should help with his big phone bill and "cabin fever" when he gets snowed in up in Monmouth. E-mail: kathyrea5@aol.com.

  • Jack Sayre was among the missing for a while, but he called from Arizona. It was so nice hearing from him. I had tracked him around the country through his family. He is doing great. Talks to Gene Manzer. Jack lost his brother Chuck Sayre (died in his sleep). Chuck had been married to Ann Russell from our class.

  • Gerry Rettela still plays racket ball for the National Masters Tournament (since 1976). He calls every year to fill me in, he also sent me a picture of his Mom who is in her late 80’s. She is the adopted "event Mom" and she was all decked out in racket ball clothing and looked smashing. Gerry should be retired by now. He said he would still be the Legislative Chair for Code Enforcement Officials in California.

  • In case some of you have e-mail that I don't know about, let me know. We have our own class Web Site (www.passco.com/vhs53.htm) thanks to Ron Reed with 58 e-mail addresses listed.
  • Also, Joan Ritchie as her own Web (joanbill@webtv.com) Site with her picture if you want to see her- she’s still a cutie.

I try to remember everyone I’ve talked to over the last year.
  • Stan Burke called - he got in touch with Marion Griffith.
  • Pat (Brown) Hall calls for our yearly talk - we talk on and on, she just cracks me up. I’m going to have to go over to Anaheim and drag her and Bob to our next get together.

As for me - our grandsons (are 5 and 6) along with our daughter are with us. I have a lot of fun with them. I know so much about Batman - I don’t know if that’s really healthy. My husband is a pro at paper airplanes (I never could make one of those).

Well, until next time - Remember, "Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly." You can’t have to many friends

Take care - Your friend, Sharon

For those of you that like to attend the "all alumni" dances, it will be held June 9, 2001 at the Furama Hotel in Westchester. The Class of ’51 will also be having their reunion at the same time.

After reading this over I hope it doesn’t sound to depressing, but people always ask me for details.
